Counselling for Life Transitions and Ongoing Challenges

Life doesn't always change in the ways we expect.

Sometimes the changes are ones we hoped for.

A new job.

Becoming a parent.

Moving home.

Retirement.

Sometimes they aren't.

The end of a relationship.

Losing someone you love.

A health diagnosis.

Redundancy.

And sometimes nothing obvious has happened at all.

You simply find yourself with the unsettling feeling that the life you've been living no longer feels quite like your own.

Whatever has brought you here, transitions can leave us feeling as though the ground beneath our feet has shifted.

When your mind won't stop trying to make sense of it all

One of the things I often notice in counselling is that life changes don't just affect what happens around us.

They affect what happens within us too.

Our minds become busy.

Replaying conversations.

Questioning decisions.

Imagining what might happen next.

Comparing life now with how it used to be.

Telling us we shoud be coping better by now.

Often, those thoughts come from a place of trying to protect us.

But sometimes the harder we search for certainty, the more stuck we begin to feel.

What if you didn't need all the answers first?

When life feels uncertain, it's natural to want clarity before taking the next step.

To wait until you feel confident.

Certain.

Ready.

But life doesn't always work that way.

Sometimes we begin to find our way not because uncertainty disappears, but because we learn that we don't have to wait for it to.

That doesn't mean pretending everything is okay.

Or forcing yourself to "stay positive".

It means making room for the thoughts and feelings that naturally come with change, while gently beginning to reconnect with the life that's important to you.

One small step at a time.

How I work

My approach is grounded in person-centred counselling, which means I believe that you are the expert on your own life.

I won't tell you what decisions to make or what your future should look like.

Instead, I offer a calm, compassionate and accepting space where we can make sense of what's happening together.

Alongside this, I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

ACT invites us to notice the stories our minds create, make room for difficult thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, and gently reconnect with what matters most to us.

During times of transition, that might mean learning to step back from the constant search for certainty, discovering that your thoughts don't have to decide your direction, and finding the courage to take meaningful steps forward, even when life still feels uncertain.

Not because everything has fallen into place.

But because your life doesn't have to stay on hold while you wait for it to.

WHEN LIFE CHANGES BUT YOU HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP YET

Life transitions often leave our minds trying to make sense of what's happened while our hearts are still catching up.

In this blog, I explore why change can feel so unsettling and share the Leaves on a Stream metaphor - an ACT exercise that can help us notice our thoughts with a little more space and compassion.

If you're considering counselling...

If life feels different but you can't quite find the words to explain why, you're not alone.

You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

If you'd like to find out whether I'm the right counsellor for you, I offer a free introduction telephone call. It gives us an opportunity to talk briefly about what's bringing you to counselling, ask any questions you may have, and decide whether we'd be a good fit to work together.

I offer face-to-face counselling in central Grimsby, as well as online counselling across the UK.

Change can feel uncertain. You don't have to wait until it feels easier before taking the first step.
