Counselling for Low Mood

Sometimes life doesn't feel heavy because of one big thing. Sometimes it's much quieter than that. You notice you're not laughing as easily. The things you used to enjoy feel like hard work.

You feel flat.

Disconnected.

As though you're simply going through the motions of each day.

Perhaps you keep telling yourself you'll feel better once you've had more sleep, more time, less stress or when life calms down. But somehow...

the feeling remains.

It can be difficult to explain

People often describe low mood as feeling "stuck".

Not necessarily in crisis.

Just... not themselves.

You might still be going to work.

Looking after your family.

Doing everything that needs to be done.

From the outside, life may look much the same as it always has.

But inside, something feels different.

Perhaps you've started withdrawing from the people around you.

Perhaps you feel irritable more often than you'd like.

Perhaps your confidence has quietly disappeared.

Or perhaps you simply find yourself wondering:

"When did I stop feeling like me?"

It's understandable to want the feeling to go away

When we're experiencing low mood, our natural instinct is often to fight it.

To criticise ourselves for feeling this way.

To wonder what's wrong with us.

To believe we should be coping better.

But the harder we push against our inner experiences, the more exhausting life can become.

Rather than asking,

"How do I get rid of this feeling?"

Perhaps a gentler question is:

"What is this feeling trying to tell me?"

Reconnecting with yourself

My approach is grounded in person-centred counselling.

I offer a calm, compassionate space where there is no expectation to have everything figured out.

Together, we'll become curious about what's been happening in your life.

We'll explore the experiences, relationships and patterns that may have contributed to how you're feeling.

Not to find someone to blame.

But to understand your story with kindness and compassion.

Alongside this, I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

ACT isn't about pretending difficult thoughts and feelings don't exist.

Nor is it about forcing yourself to "think positively".

Instead, it helps us develop a different relationship with those experiences, so they no longer have quite the same hold over us.

As we do that, we can begin reconnecting with the people, activities and values that once gave life meaning.

Not because everything suddenly feels better.

But because life doesn't have to remain on hold while we wait for that day to arrive.

Counselling doesn't begin with fixing you

One of the things I care deeply about is helping people realise that experiencing low mood doesn't mean there is something fundamentally wrong with them.

Sometimes our minds and bodies are responding to loss.

Stess.

Loneliness.

Overwhelm.

Unmet needs.

Life.

Counselling isn't about becoming someone different.

It's about reconnecting with the person who has always been there underneath the struggle.

If you're considering counselling...

If you've been living with low mood for a while, you don't have to wait until things become unbearable before reaching out.

Whether you've been feeling this way for weeks, months or much longer, counselling can offer a space to slow down, make sense of what's happening and begin exploring what might help you move towards a life that feels more meaningful and connected.

If you're unsure whether I'm the right counsellor for you, you're welcome to book a free Introduction Call. It's an opportunity to ask questions, find out more about how I work and get a feel for what it's like to talk with me.

Already feel ready to begin? You don't have to have an Introduction Call first. If you've explored how I work and feel that I might be the right counsellor for you, you can book your first session directly.

I offer face-to-face counselling in central Grimsby, as well as online counselling across the UK.
